The Sister Island – GOZO

Gozo means joy and a visit to this relaxed little sister island of Malta should bring exactly that. Though separated from mainland Malta by a mere 5km stretch of sea Gozo is distinctly different. The Island is a third the size of Malta, more rural and much more tranquil. Gozo is known for its picturesque scenery, pristine coastline and untouched country trails. Baroque churches rise from the heart of small villages, and traditional farmhouses dot the rural landscape. Its culture and way of life are rooted in tradition and yet open to the present. Blue Grotto and Marsaxlokk

The Blue Grotto is actually a number of sea caverns on the southern coast of Malta, west of the Wied iz-Zurrieq harbour and across the small uninhabited islet of Filfla. Everyday from sunrise until about 1300hrs, a unique sight can be observed here. The cave's location combined with the sunlight lead to the water mirroring shows numerous shades of blue. Several caverns mirror the brilliant phosphorescent colours of the underwater flora; other caverns show a deep dark shade of blue. If weather permits, you can do a 25 minute boat trip around the caves.

Marsaxlokk is a very popular attraction for tourists and locals because fresh fish and seafood caught during the same morning can be bought. On Sunday you can go check out the market. It is very interesting and attractive as many different items are sold. Although the market was originally a fish market, it has developed and now it also sells locally produced honey, fruit jams, wine as well as vegetables, souvenirs and clothes.

Santa Maria Tower Comino

In 1618 the military engineer Vittorio Cassar designed the tower for Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt of the Knights of Malta. Funds for its construction were raised primarily by means of the sale of Comino brushwood. Located roughly in the centre of the southern coast of the island, it formed part of a chain of defensive towers – the Wignacourt, Lascaris, and De Redin towers – installed at vantage points along the coastline of the Maltese Islands. St. Mary's Tower greatly improved communications between the islands of Malta and Gozo.
